A dramatic architecture of stalactites, stalagmites, stone waterfalls, and limestone curtains stands still as one descends deep within Shihua Cave. Hailed as the “Underground Pearl of Beijing,” this cave goes by many names: Stone Flower Cave, Qianzhen Cave, Shifo Cave, and Stone Buddha Cave.
As I stood in the middle of the open grounds leading to Shihua Cave, a heavy wall of trapped heat and humidity overwhelmed my skin with a sharp, prickling sensation, making the already oppressive 38°C weather feel almost unbearable. Although surrounded by the green rolling hills of Beijing’s Fangshan District, the blinding sunlight made it hard to appreciate the view. Our guide, probably noticing my increasing distress, ushered me toward a covered walkway, painted in an iconic Chinese red, shielding me and a few others from further enduring the sun’s unforgiving heat.
The moment we stepped inside the cave, the darkness swiftly enveloped us and the blistering heat faded into the cool, breezy air. Electric lights in shades of red, blue, and green gradually painted the limestone walls, highlighting their sculpted contours and rugged textures. These vibrant fixtures then illuminated our path as we continued our vertical descent into the slippery depths of one of Asia’s most structurally complex underground systems.

Descending seven distinct geological layers, this rare, multilevel karst cave houses a massive subterranean archive formed roughly 70 million years ago, covering an area of approximately two hectares. For ages, flowing and stagnant waters have sculpted a palatial architecture of sharp stalactites, towering stalagmites, and cascading stone waterfalls, while splashing waters formed a variety of unique, delicate stone pearls and crystal flowers resembling lotuses and mushrooms. Of the cave’s seven floors—the lowest being an underground river—the first four are open to the public, following a winding 2,500-meter route split into 16 chambers and over a hundred distinctive landscapes.
Walking behind a loosely formed single-file line, our journey unfolded in quiet grandeur and profound awe. When we think of a cave, we often imagine a haunting and claustrophobic space where heads are kept low and anxiety high—this is everything, but that. From the massive stone curtains that draped tens of meters from the ceiling—frozen in ripple-like movement—to fragile crystalline structures branching off the damp walls, it felt as though we were moving through a museum of geological wonders.

Naturally, the deeper we ventured, the thinner the air grew and the more slippery the path became. I actually tripped twice. Each time, a jolt of panic rippled across my body—and seemingly through the others’ as well, as multiple hands quickly grabbed me by the shoulder, keeping me steady. By this time, a few of our older companions opted to skip the rest of the tour for safety reasons. Thus, we continued down to the darker third level as a group of nine. Alongside my Filipino friend and me were four Chinese nationals finishing their PhDs in Scotland, my newfound companions—a Ghanaian engineer doing research in China and an Indonesian scientist working in The Netherlands—and a quiet German engineer whose only two interactions with us were a brief “Hallo” and a quick “Bye.”
If you’re wondering why everyone in our group was an engineer, a scientist, or an engineer-scientist, it’s because this private tour was arranged by the conference we were all attending: the 12th World Congress of Chemical Engineering (WCCE 12) & the 21st Asia Pacific Confederation of Chemical Engineering Congress 2025 (APCChE 2025). Yet, all those combined professional and academic titles were no match for our tour guide, who exclusively spoke Chinese. It was fine at first because one of the older Chinese ladies was graciously translating everything for us, but when she turned back, the rest of us non-Chinese speakers were left in the dark—literally and figuratively.

This sudden absence, however, ended up working out for the best as it drew me deeper into the experience. Every corner and every wall of this isolated ecosystem expressed an image so worthy of fascination that I was repeatedly stopped frozen in my tracks, admiring the vision around. It was at this time that I fully saw the mosaic of textures carved on the stones and how softly the rhythmic echoes of the dripping water broke the silence of the cave. The perpetually wet walls of this immense underworld we descended into spoke a language of their own—one that has been communicated for eons, and one that I, fortunately, understood.
While the first and second tiers showcased dramatic monuments and highly complex vertical networks of geological marvels, the third level offered a rather unexpected view—rows of aging ceramic spirit jars. Inside the cave, the air maintains a year-round temperature between 13°C and 16°C, making it a great, although unusual, subterranean cellar. Isn’t it fascinating to think that somewhere, someone may have a drink in their hand that had rested in one of Earth’s greatest natural wonders?

As soon as we reached the fourth level, where the lights were evidently dimmer, the walls damper, and the air even sharper, we were greeted by the most delicate and intricate clusters of crystal flowers. This level lacked the grand, imposing entrances of the sky-scraping limestones; however, its beauty resided in the microstructures that demanded our undivided attention. This is the deepest point open to the public. Beyond it lies the gateway to the fifth, sixth, and seventh tiers, where only authorized researchers, as of the moment, have the privilege of exploring.
After two hours of trailing through this massive cave, our journey looped back to the exit staircase on level two. By this time, my body had grown accustomed to the cool environment. So, when I finally stepped out of the cave, the heavy and scorching Beijing air hit me like a blazing fever—one that engulfed me and left me feeling faint and lightheaded. Fortunately, after a few minutes outside, my body slowly found its equilibrium.
Standing underneath the bright, mid-afternoon sun, I looked back at the tunnel we had just exited. It is an amazing thing to realize that beneath the lush, sun-baked landscape lies a humble and complex geological marvel, holding millions of years of history within its damp, eroded walls.
